ATLANTA (GA) – The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health recently opened the doors of the newly constructed Waycross Public Health Laboratory, a regional state facility that will provide screening, diagnostic and reference laboratory services to citizens of the state through county health departments, public health clinics, physicians, hospitals and state agencies.
"The new Waycross Public Health Laboratory is a huge asset to the Southeast region of the state and to the work we do," said Dr. Stuart Brown, Director of the Division of Public Health. "With the new lab, we are able to further enhance our testing capabilities and provide increased support to the citizens of Georgia."
The single-story building, which replaces the former Waycross laboratory, will serve as a backup testing unit for the central public health lab in Decatur (metro Atlanta). An additional regional state laboratory is located in Albany.
The Waycross Public Health Laboratory consists of increased lab, office and training space along with expanded specimen testing options. In addition to routine microbiology, STD and rabies analysis, the new public health lab will provide additional state bioterrorism testing as well. Plans are currently being developed to also conduct chemical testing at the facility in the future.
The innovative lab extends increased support for public health in the Southeast part of the state by offering more training support for the Waycross area. With additional space for training, the Waycross Public Health Laboratory now has the capacity to further educate nurses and hospital lab workers operating in that region. The lab will work closely with Ware County and Okefeonkee Technical Institute to provide lab work and testing rotations to students and other designated individuals.
