May 31, 2006 - Today Governor Sonny Perdue hosted a group of mothers and babies at the Capitol to inspire citizens to learn more about the health benefits of breastfeeding and to promote employer support for breastfeeding mothers in the workforce. Lactation consultants and representatives of federal, state, and local programs that promote and support breastfeeding were also on hand as Governor Perdue proclaimed May as Breastfeeding Awareness Month in Georgia.

May 26, 2006 - Today, B.J. Walker, Commissioner for the Department of Human Resources announced that new services for Chatham County youth promised last September are up and running, including a mobile crisis response team, an after school substance abuse program and new waivers for children with developmental disabilities. These and other investments represent a 50% increase in mental health funding for children and adolescents to a total of $4.6 million.
May 24, 2006 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services (DAS) and Division of Public Health (DPH) are announcing the launch of the Georgia Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (GSFMNP) which will take place June 1 – August 31, 2006 in five selected areas of the state. The program’s goal is to improve access to and increase consumption of fruits and vegetables while providing nutrition education, including health benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables, healthy meal plans, recipes, cooking, freezing, canning demonstrations and more.
May 22, 2006 - Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), is challenging Georgians to get more physical activity through the Be Active statewide initiative. On Tuesday, May 23, residents of Macon and surrounding areas will join Gov. Perdue, local elected officials, and state health leaders to kick off the campaign by walking a mile for better health.
May 19, 2006 - About 1,660 non-custodial parents in Gwinnett County have been sent letters notifying them that if they visit the Gwinnett County Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) on May 24 – 26 or June 5 – 9 and work with staff to establish their child support obligation, they will not have to go to court.
May 18, 2006 – The Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) is announcing a rate increase for Georgia's Childcare and Parent Services program, CAPS. The CAPS program provides financial assistance for child care to over 38,000 low-income Georgia families, representing 70,000 children across the state.“This rate increase is in response to a Market Rate Survey that was completed in 2005 which showed that child care rates have risen across the state. It is aimed at helping low income families with access to affordable child care,” said DFCS Deputy Director Martha Okafor.

May 16, 2006 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Division of Public Health identified two laboratory-confirmed mumps cases among Georgia residents during the second week of May 2006. The two confirmed Mumps cases in Georgia, however, have no known link to the outbreak in the Midwest or any link to each other.
May 16, 2006 - The DeKalb County Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) has sent letters to some 3,000 non-custodial parents, notifying them that if they visit the office between 8 a.m. and noon on May 22nd, 23rd or 24th and work with staff to establish their child support obligation, they will not have to go to court.
