April 5, 2012 - ATLANTA – On April 24, the National Nonprofit Risk Management Center will headline a free, full-day workshop titled “Safer Senior Ministry Projects: Risk Management for Faith-Based Volunteers.” The Georgia Department of Human Services’ (DHS), Division of Aging Services will host the statewide event at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth in Macon, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 100 people to register will receive a complimentary volunteer management book.
January 25, 2012 - ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Human Services’ (DHS), Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) is collecting teddy bears and other stuffed animals for children as part of their annual Bearable Hugs for Georgia’s Children campaign. The toys will be given to children receiving care at pediatric facilities, women’s shelters, law enforcement agencies and other children’s organizations throughout Georgia.
January 12, 2012 - ATLANTA – Alka Aneja, M.D., a board certified adult and adolescent psychiatrist, has been named Medical Director of the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS). In this role she will be responsible for providing medical direction and clinical oversight of reviews for cases handled by the Department. She most recently served as an Assistant Professor at John Hopkins University School of Medicine for the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
December 21, 2011 - ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) is announcing the availability of the Problem Solving Court program (PSC) in Ellijay to assist non-custodial parents with meeting their child support obligations. PSC provides an alternative to incarceration for failing to meet child support obligations by addressing underlying issues and barriers that cause non-custodial parents to become chronic non-payers of child support.
October 24, 2011 - ATLANTA – Americans now have seven full weeks, starting October 15, to select new Medicare plans or choose to stay with current coverage. During this year’s Medicare open enrollment period, which ends December 7, the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Aging Services and the state’s Area Agencies on Aging will offer free one-on-one assistance and community presentations to help Georgians make decisions about Medicare health and prescription drug plans.
October 18, 2011 - SNAP (Food Stamp) recipients will soon experience a change in the timing of their monthly benefit. Starting in November, the State will use a new formula to determine when clients will receive their benefits. Food stamp benefit amounts will not change as a result of this new process and the date will still fall between the 5th and the 14th of each month. Benefits will now be distributed based on the last two digits of the Client ID for the Head of Household.
September 27, 2011 - ATLANTA –The Georgia Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program recently received three awards for exceptional performance by the U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA) at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The Georgia SMP earned the Complex Issues Award: Highest Dollar Amount Referred for Further Action, Innovation in Collaboration and Partnership Activities and the Expansion of SMP Program Capacity awards.

Reese, III, Esq. recently announced the appointment of new leadership to key posts within the Department’s Offices of Residential Child Care (ORCC), General Counsel, and Budget and Planning. August 26, 2011 - ATLANTA – Coping with care giving may be more about what you think than what you do. The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Aging Services (DAS) is collaborating with the University of Wisconsin to understand what triggers caregivers’ stress, so that professionals can make caring for a loved one easier.
August 15, 2011 - Most Georgians think that flashlights, duct tape, batteries, and canned goods will get them through an emergency, but these items alone are not enough especially for older adults and people with disabilities who may require additional supplies. Seventy-eight percent of Georgians believe they are adequately prepared to get through 72 hours following an emergency, but studies show that most people have not taken the necessary steps to fully prepare themselves for a large-scale disaster.
June 29, 2011 - ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Family and Child Services (DFCS) will hold a public hearing Thursday, July 14, 2011 to receive comments and feedback on the FY 2012 State Plan for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program Block Grant (LIHEAP). The LIHEAP block grant provides assistance with home heating costs, weatherization and other home energy needs for eligible elderly, homebound, and other low-income Georgians.
June 27, 2011 - ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Family and Child Services (DFCS) will hold a public hearing Thursday, July 14, 2011 to receive comments and feedback on the FY 2012 State Plan for the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. The CSBG program assists eligible low-income Georgians remove obstacles and provides tools to move towards self-sufficiency.

June 6, 2011 - ATLANTA – More than 260 foster care youth will be honored and recognized for their educational achievements at the19th Annual Celebration of Excellence. The Celebration of Excellence is a statewide graduation event and scholarship program for youth in Georgia’s foster care system who are graduating from high school, GED programs, vocational school or college. The event will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 6 p.m. at Georgia State University’s Rialto Center for the Arts.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of Aging Services has joined with eight organizations to create the At-Risk Adult Crime Tactics (ACT) Specialist Certification – a credential for professionals who are mandated by state law to report suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation. The first certification courses will be available statewide in early 2011.

OCSS recently added 21 new agents to the state’s Fatherhood Program as the number of non-custodial parents receiving unemployment benefits has quadrupled since 2008. May 20, 2009 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health announced today that the number of confirmed human cases of novel H1N1 virus in the state has increased to 27 with the addition of two cases that were tested in North Carolina.
