Food Stamp Benefit Distribution Date May Change

SNAP (Food Stamp) recipients will soon experience a change in the timing of their monthly benefit. Starting in November, the State will use a new formula to determine when clients will receive their benefits. Food stamp benefit amounts will not change as a result of this new process and the date will still fall between the 5th and the 14th of each month. Benefits will now be distributed based on the last two digits of the Client ID for the Head of Household.

DHR accepting applications for energy assistance

The Department of Human Resources (DHR) is providing cooling assistance for low income Georgians through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The $6.4 million federally funded program will provide much needed assistance to those who are experiencing added financial strain in paying their power bills due to recent high temperatures. The state expects to serve approximately 24,000 low income households.

DHS Encourages Aging and Disabled to be Prepared for Hurricanes and Severe Weather

Most Georgians think that flashlights, duct tape, batteries, and canned goods will get them through an emergency, but these items alone are not enough especially for older adults and people with disabilities who may require additional supplies. Seventy-eight percent of Georgians believe they are adequately prepared to get through 72 hours following an emergency, but studies show that most people have not taken the necessary steps to fully prepare themselves for a large-scale disaster.

DHS Appoints New Leadership in Budget, General Counsel, and Residential Child Care Offices

ATLANTA – Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) Commissioner Clyde L. Reese, III, Esq. recently announced the appointment of new leadership to key posts within the Department’s Offices of Residential Child Care (ORCC), General Counsel, and Budget and Planning. LaMarva Ivory will serve as Director of ORCC, R. Demetrius Taylor as Director of Budget and Planning, and Rachel King as Deputy General Counsel. "These individuals have consistently demonstrated strong leadership while acting in the best interest of Georgians,” said Reese. “I am confident they will serve the Department well in their new roles.”

DHS Seeks Public Comment on State’s Plan for Energy Assistance

The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Family and Child Services (DFCS) will hold a public hearing Thursday, July 14, 2011 to receive comments and feedback on the FY 2012 State Plan for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program Block Grant (LIHEAP). The LIHEAP block grant provides assistance with home heating costs, weatherization and other home energy needs for eligible elderly, homebound, and other low-income Georgians.

DHS Seeks Public Comment on Plan to Help Low-Income Georgians

The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Family and Child Services (DFCS) will hold a public hearing Thursday, July 14, 2011 to receive comments and feedback on the FY 2012 State Plan for the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. The CSBG program assists eligible low-income Georgians remove obstacles and provides tools to move towards self-sufficiency.
