Aging Event Helps Faith-Based Volunteers Reduce Risk

April 5, 2012

ATLANTA – On April 24, the National Nonprofit Risk Management Center will headline a free, full-day workshop titled “Safer Senior Ministry Projects: Risk Management for Faith-Based Volunteers.” The Georgia Department of Human Services’ (DHS), Division of Aging Services will host the statewide event at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth in Macon, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 100 people to register will receive a complimentary volunteer management book.

“We encourage communities to send teams so that they can get the most out of a variety of breakout sessions,” said Dr. James J. Bulot, Director of the DHS’ Division of Aging Services. “The event kicks off the Division’s forthcoming efforts to provide technical assistance and resource information on aging to faith-based organizations and other groups that perform volunteer service.”

The workshop’s afternoon risk management track features presentations about policy development, volunteer insurance, and tips to prevent common accidents. A project coordination track will highlight Georgia nonprofits that work closely with faith-based volunteers to provide rides to seniors, repair elders’ houses, and perform home modification. A third track will focus on innovative, low-cost ways to connect neighbors and mobilize volunteer teams.
