DHS provides helpful tips this Falls Prevention Awareness Week

As our aging population in Georgia continues to grow, so does their risk of falling. Falls do not have to be a normal part of aging, as they can cause great bodily damage. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of 10 falls results in an injury that causes the older adult to restrict their activities. According to the National Council on Aging, every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. That’s why the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) is recognizing Falls Prevention Awareness Week, Sept. 23-27.

Falls are a leading cause of injury for people aged 65 and older, but they can be prevented. According to the CDC, 25% of Americans over 65 fall each year, resulting in over three million injuries treated in emergency departments annually, one million hospitalizations and over 38,000 deaths. There are proven ways to prevent falls and protect your loved ones. DHS, Area Agencies on Aging, and partners throughout Georgia have embraced opportunities to help older adults stay active and make their homes safer, these include:

  • Doing exercises that increase leg strength and improve balance like Tai Chi, A Matter of Balance, and Bingocize (offered by Georgia Health Matters)
  • Getting rid of trip hazards and keeping floors clutter free
  • Adding grab bars in the bathroom
  • Having handrails and lights installed on all staircases
  • Talking to your doctor about drug interactions
  • Having annual vision and hearing screenings
