Champion Your Health During Older Americans Month

The Department of Human Services’ (DHS) Division of Aging Services (DAS) proudly observes Older Americans Month (OAM) every May. The OAM theme for 2026 is “Champion Your Health.” The theme focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as the foundation of healthy aging by taking an active role in managing your health and making informed decisions that support independence.

Georgia’s older adult population is one of the fastest growing in the nation with 21% of the state’s population over age 60. As people age, they may need help locating a meal, transportation services, homemaker services, or any number of other home and community-based resources.

To support Georgians as they age, DAS oversees the Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ADRC), the state’s network of 12 Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), and the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). These programs support older Georgians and provide options to help them age in place when possible.

There are many services available across Georgia including nutrition and wellness programs, caregiver programs, and more. If you or someone you know is looking for services in their area, the ADRC is a great place to start. The ADRC is a coordinated system of partnering organizations that are dedicated to providing information about long-term services and supports. Georgia’s ADRC serves older adults, adults with disabilities, families, caregivers, and professionals in all of Georgia’s 159 counties. To find resources and services in your area, please contact the Division of Aging Services’ ADRC at 866-552-4464 or visit the ADRC website.

DAS and the AAAs tailor programs to meet the needs of older Georgians. The AAAs focus on providing home and community-based services that promote physical and mental well-being. To locate a AAA near you, visit the DAS website

Additionally, Georgia also offers SHIP, which provides free, unbiased information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers regarding health and drug plans. SHIP staff host a free informational webinar each month covering a variety of topics related to Medicare. Learn more about SHIP and register for upcoming webinars here
