Building Brighter Futures: Celebrating National Child Support Awareness Month in Georgia

Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and every parent plays an important role in making that possible. During National Child Support Awareness Month each August, the Georgia Department of Human Services’ (DHS) Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) recognizes the meaningful impact child support has on strengthening families, expanding opportunities for children, and building healthier communities across the state. 

Behind every child support case is a child whose future is shaped by consistent support, stability, and the shared commitment of both parents. While child support is often viewed through a financial lens, its impact extends far beyond monthly payments. It helps provide the essentials children depend on every day, from safe housing and nutritious meals, to health care, school supplies, and extracurricular activities that encourage growth and success. 

The National Child Support Enforcement Program was established in 1975 to help ensure children receive the financial support they deserve. Over the past five decades, the program has evolved from primarily recovering public assistance costs to a family-focused partnership that promotes parental accountability, strengthens family stability, and improves outcomes for children. Through innovative services, strategic collaborative partnerships, and customer-oriented solutions, DCSS strives daily to eliminate obstacles, foster cooperation, and link families with the resources they need to progress. 

The results reflect that commitment. During Federal Fiscal Year 2025, which ran from Oct. 1, 2024, through Sept. 30, 2025, DCSS distributed more than $659 million in child support, helped more than 213,000 parents meet their child support obligations, and provided services that benefited more than 389,000 children. These milestones represent families with greater financial security, children with increased opportunities, and parents working together to invest in their children' s future. 

As we recognize National Child Support Awareness Month, we also celebrate the parents, child support professionals, employers, judges, attorneys, and community partners whose shared commitment makes a meaningful difference every day.
