Now more than ever, completing the census matters

Census Day on April 1 has come and gone, but your opportunity to be counted in this year’s census is still possible. The U.S. Census Bureau is adapting and delaying some of their operations to protect the health and safety of their staff and the public. The final deadline to respond is now August 14, rather than the initial date, July 31. Census staff will wait to follow up in person starting in late April.

Below is a summary of the adjusted plan:

Census Bureau staff will assist people with responding online at places such as grocery stores and community centers.

Planned Schedule: March 30 – July 31

Revised Schedule: April 13 – August 14

Census staff will interview households in person that have not responded online, by phone or by mail.

Planned Schedule: May 13 – July 31

Revised Schedule: May 28 – August 14

Why does it matter to you?

Census data informs how federal funding is distributed to improve public transportation or determine locations for places like libraries, senior centers and hospitals. Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps (SNAP), public housing and road construction are other examples of federal programs that receive funding determined by data derived from the census.

The 2020 Census is open for self-response online at 2020Census.gov, over the phone by calling the number provided in your invitation and by paper through the mail.

Again, it is your duty to make sure Every.One.Counts.
