Looking Back at Medicaid Unwinding
In March 2020, the U.S. Congress passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The FFCRA allowed Georgia Medicaid members to remain eligible for continuous coverage during the federal public health emergency (PHE).
In December 2022, the federal government passed a federal spending bill that permitted states to begin Medicaid redetermination on April 1, 2023, regardless of the PHE end date. At that time, Georgia was required to redetermine eligibility for approximately 2.7 million Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids® members.
On April 1, 2023, the State of Georgia began redetermining eligibility for all people who had been receiving Medicaid or PeachCare for Kids® coverage at that time. Medicaid Redeterminations ended June 30, 2024.
